homegrown features various flora that grows within my father’s garden back home in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. During the creation of this print, I was thinking about how diverse Hawaiʻi is in terms of both people and the plants that inhabit the land.

Looking at Hawaiʻi’s history, people from various countries have moved to the islands for various reasons and as a result, there are many generations of people who view Hawaiʻi as their home, regardless if they are or are not kānaka maoli (Native Hawaiian).

In my own background, my father is not kānaka maoli but my mother is. My time living in Kansas has made me notice how unique it is to grow up and live in a place full of lush biodiversity, thus I wanted to acknowledge this with examples of some plants that are either endemic, naturalized, or cultivated in Hawai'ʻi.
